Friendster, the pioneer social networking site, aims to increase its monthly active visitors worldwide to 10 million by end of this year from four million currently.

Its owner, who is also MOL Global Pte Ltd Group Chief Executive Officer Ganesh Kumar Bangah said the introduction of Friendster Hotspots and Friendster iCafe would assist Friendster increase its user-base in Malaysia.

Friendster had also allocated US$2 million to implement and promote the new platform, he told a press conference here today after officially announcing Friendster’s redesign as a social discovery and gaming platform that offers users a unique experience which enables social discovery, games and rewards in Malaysia following its global launch in Manila in April 2012.

Ganesh said Friendster Hotspots provide retail outlets with a free Wi-Fi infrastructure funded completely by advertising.

“The hotspots are currently available in popular branded food and beverage outlets such as Starbucks, Old Town White Coffee, Kenny Rogers Roasters, Wendy’s, Krispy Kreme and Papa John’s.

“Nationwide, there are currently over 350 retail outlets using the hotspots with an average of 1.5 million unique users a month and 70 per cent of the hotspots users are mobile users,” he said.

He also said Friendster iCafe is a free cybercafe management system integrating operations and accounts for ease of owner administration.

“Friendster is aiming to achieve over 1,000 cybercafes with plans to expand both Friendster Hotspot and Friendster iCafe services to the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and India by end of 2012,” Ganesh said.

Further to redesigned platform, Friendster also has Developers Programme to encourage content developers to commercialise their games via Friendster.

“Friendster presently has 56 massively multi-player online and social games on the platform and allows developers to monetise their game using Friendster Coins which is powered by MOL’s payment platform. “Friendster Coins guarantees zero chargeback to its developers thus eliminating risk of fraud for developers,” Ganesh said.

Besides global partners, he said Friendster also wanted to help as many local developers promote their locally developed games on the platform.

“Friendster provides a valuable platform for Malaysian start-ups to reach a global audience while allowing the start-ups to monetise their content,” he said. – Bernama
